Happy National Coffee Day

Oh happy day! My coffee crush will now be shared with you, my lovely followers :)
Today, it's all things coffee here at A Bunch of Bishops!

To start, I have a Pinterest board dedicated to coffee and coffee mugs.
Check it out here and follow me if you'd like :)
Here are a few of my favorite pins...

This is me, every day!

I love almond milk in coffee and this combo just takes it to a whole new level!

These mugs - Enough said!

I have shared how much I love Iced Coffee and how I drink it every day. That is not an exaggeration by any means! I have made several versions over the years but the one that I currently make is as follows:

1 tbsp instant coffee or espresso granules (whichever I have on hand at the time)
1 tbsp of either white sugar or brown sugar (brown makes it slightly sweeter and more caramel like)
1-1/2 cups of milk (lately I have been using 1% but whole milk is especially delicious!)
Mix it all together and pour over 1-1/2 cups crushed ice.
Use a straw, it makes sipping it all the more enjoyable :)

Here is what mine looks like...

I made an iced coffee especially for this shot.
It's my second iced coffee today.
Oh the sacrifices of blogging :)

Finally, this always makes me laugh and I hope it makes you smile too!!
This is my day without coffee...

Happy National Coffee Day!

Ok (gulp) here I go...

This is the guest bedroom & where I keep all my crafting stuff. Behind me is the guest bed. I intend to make this room welcoming for a guest and also a fun place for my crafting.

That shiny gold number in there is from my roller skating days - oh the glory of 80's roller skating costumes:)

Next week I will show my progress and the craft supply organization.
Stay tuned!!!

$6 Dollars & My Cleaning Supplies Are Organized!!

Last night, while I was getting my boys out of the shower I heard that deafening silence that can only mean one thing! My daughter is probably into something she shouldn't be in! I ran to the kitchen and found my daughter (who is 18 months old and such a sweet rascal) playing in the cleaning supplies under the kitchen sink. I immediately turned her over, face up, and rinsed her face, eyes and mouth with fresh water. Lesson learned - my daughter now knows how to open the kitchen sliding door and squeeze a squirt bottle. It's time to move all the cleaning supplies and get this place safe!

Under The Kitchen Sink Before...

Under The Kitchen Sink After...

When I moved all the cleaning supplies to my supply cabinet, this is what greeted me...
 I know, I know!
What a mess.

So I took this opportunity (and reminder) to get organized.
I headed over to Dollar Tree and purchased 6 storage containers.
This project cost me $6!!!!!

And, drum roll please...
Ta-da!

I am such a sucker for that 70's olive green color, so when I saw that color I was sold!
I am thinking of going back tonight and buying some more of these: bathroom, husband's tools, food storage, laundry supplies, etc. I THINK I LOVE THEM :)

My printer is currently out of ink so I made some quick labels that can be changed out for better ones later. But for now, having some simple and uniform labels is helping to make this quick project look finished.

If you noticed, there are 3 rows of containers in the finished photo and in the before photo the cabinet has 4 shelves. For that 4th shelf, I am making a lined diaper box like this one from Our Home From Scratch's blog. I will post a tutorial on that at a later time.

Have a fantastic weekend friends!

Ava's Home Birth Story

A few months back I shared my birth story on Kelley's awesome blog The Grant Life. I just realized that I should probably share it on my blog too!! :)

I am a Mom of 3 and I have had 3 very different birth stories. I find it funny that my birth stories match the personalities of my children - coincidence, maybe - but still fun to think about! Today I will share my 3rd birth with you :)

When I found out I was pregnant with my 3rd child I wanted nothing more than to birth at home. Without going into too many details about my first 2 births, I never wanted to step foot in a hospital to birth a child again. I have a friend who was a licensed midwife and she became my amazing midwife for my 3rd pregnancy. I still went to an OB and had that as a backup plan just in case something went wrong with either the pregnancy or the delivery.

My pregnancy was amazing with my 3rd child. I was sicker than I was with my first 2 but other than that - amazing! I found out that I was having a daughter and was nervous but excited. I will be honest with you all, I never wanted a daughter. But, God knows me so well and created me just the way I am and He knew just what kind of daughter to bless me with. I learned to trust even more in the sovereignty of God through this! :)

On to the good stuff...

All my pregnancies go "late".
I hate due dates and what it does psychologically to the Mom (and what it does to Dr's and everyone else around you once you pass said "due date"). Now on my 3rd pregnancy, I knew there was nothing "wrong" with the size of the baby - I just have big babies...there is nothing "wrong" with the size of my pelvis - 2 other babies passed through just fine...I figured then that there must be something "wrong" with the whole practice of assigning a "due date". I talked to my midwife about it and she said back in the day they used to give you a birth month - so that is what I started to tell people...I am due in April - some time in April :)

On April 15th (almost 2 weeks past my "due date") I started to have some slight menstrual cramping. I sat on my exercise ball and just rested and let my belly hammock forward so that my daughter would be in the best possibly position. I went to bed around 10:30pm and was awoken at 5am with some pretty strong cramps. I went to the bathroom and drank some water and tried to go back to sleep. My cramps started getting more painful and consistent and then before I knew it I was having pretty regular contractions.

I let my husband sleep and got my kids up and ready, fed them breakfast and called my sister to take my kids to my Dad's house. I knew this was the real deal :)

I called my midwife at 10am and asked if she could come over. I then called my best friend Stacy and asked her to come. Stacy brought me Starbucks ice to much on - what a perfect best friend. Stacy has been at the births of all of my children - she is an amazing support in labor & delivery! My husband and my midwife set up the birthing tub. Once filled, I hopped in and relaxed through my contractions. Here is one of my favorite photos from laboring in the birthing pool. I was in the middle of a contraction and Stacy was pushing on my lower back to relieve the pressure and ease the pain...

I labored until 3pm and I felt ready but my water had not yet broken. I was not surprised seeing as how my water never broke on my first 2 births either. My midwife checked me and the water bag was in the way of my daughters head. My midwife did not want to break my water unnaturally so she recommended that I walk around and allow my water to break naturally. Ummm, this was not a fun part of the process for me. I wanted to get the baby out but she was blocked by the bag of water. I tried and tried but nothing. I finally asked her to check me one more time to see if the baby's head was further down. Right when I laid down and before she got a glove fully on, my water burst! I rushed (well as much as a huge pregnant lady can rush while about to push) over to the tub and pushed a few times but something didn't feel right. I would push and my daughters head would come out and then spring back up. My midwife checked me and then told me to get out of the pool and sit on the birthing stool. I sat on the stool and she told me to get the baby out with one push. I prayed and took a breath and pushed my sweet daughter out with everything in me. My daughter came spinning out and we saw that the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. My midwife was there to catch her and hand her to me. I snuggled her tight and my midwife gave her a breath and she pinked up and opened her eyes. She was so calm and so quiet - and so beautiful. She was not quiet in a bad way, she just seemed to be taking in the moments and I could feel her sense of calm and comfort in my arms...

We welcomed our daughter
Ava Marie Bishop
into the world (via our bedroom, haha)
at 5:02pm on April 16th, 2011.

While I moved over to the bed to rest and all, my husband got to snuggle his sweet daughter. It was a bright spring day and the weather was perfect for her arrival!!

My boys came home and met their new sister...

My midwife asked me how much I thought she weighed and I said that I thought she looked smaller than Owen and so I was guessing 8-1/2 lbs. She just laughed and said I was almost a pound off. I was shocked when she told me that I just homebirthed a 9lb 7oz baby! Wowzers!!

My favorite things about this birth...
~peaceful~
~worship music played the entire time~
~I was able to close my eyes and labor uninterrupted~
~comfortable~
~simple~
~I was able to have the birth that i wanted~
~my midwife stayed with me for like 6 hours after the birth and gave me such tender, attentive, amazing postpardum care~

My daughter is now 18 months old and she's such a wonderful addition to the Bishop bunch...

Embroidery Hoop Wall Art for a Girls Room

I have been inspired by all the beautiful ways I have seen others using embroidery hoops as decorations. I am sure you have seen them all over Pinterest. I decided to add a few embroidery hoops to my daughters room but changed them up a bit, to match our style :)

Both of the embroidery hoops have clippings of fabric from my favorite newborn outfits that Ava wore. Every time I look at them I am reminded of her wearing the outfits and how tiny she used to be :) Kids grow WAY TOO FAST!

Here is the first one I'll show you...
The Fabric is from the backside of a pair of corduroy pants that she wore at a month old :)
This is simple to make and looks awesome on the wall in her room!
I love the bright green ribbon with the browns :)
The frame is from a garage sale and only cost $0.25!!!

The second embroidery hoop in Ava's room looks like this...
The striped green & white fabric is from a dress Ava wore at a month old. I loved this simple cheery dress and the stripes look AWESOME framed in that oval embroidery hoop. My friend Debbie found the wooden sign with Ava's name at TJ Maxx (I think) and when she gave it to me I instantly knew what to do with it! I actually inverted the fabric so that the fabric would be a backing to her name. I used a razor blade to cut the fabric off the edge that faced me. I then used wood glue to glue the sign onto the inside ledge of the embroidery hoop.

Here is a close up of what I just tried to explain, haha...

I love taking a craft idea and making it uniquely "me".
Have you decorated with embroidery hoops?
If so, post a link to your blog post! I'd love to see what you came up with! :)

Wrap-Around Button Scarf {Simple DIY}

Today I am going to share my Wrap-Around Button Scarf pattern.
This is a super quick and easy craft, perfect if you are just beginning to crochet.
The scarf took me about an hour to make.

What you need:
Size K (6.5mm) Crochet Hook
1 Skein of Super Bulky Yarn
I used Loops & Threads, Country Loom, Acrylic Yarn, Super Bulky (6)
Color #01165 Driftwood

Pattern:
Step 1: Chain 98
Step 2: Turn around, Skip first 3 Chain Stitches and Treble Stitch (Triple Stitch) 95 times
Step 3: Turn around, Chain 3, skip those 3 ch's & Treble Stitch (Triple Stitch) 95 times
Step 4: Turn around, Chain 3, skip those 3 ch's & Treble Stitch (Triple Stitch) 95 times
Step 5: Tie off, sew in ends.
Step 6: Using a plastic yarn needle, sew a Large Button (2") onto one of the ends of the scarf. The button will fit perfectly in the Treble Stitch holes.

This is by far my favorite scarf! The scarf can be worn 3 ways:

Draped around the neck...

Wrapped once around the neck and buttoned...

Wrapped twice around the neck and buttoned (resembles a cowl neck scarf)...

Have fun making your own versions of this wrap-around button scarf!!

Making Print Art

I picked up a great book from the library this past week called "123 I Can Make Prints". It is the perfect book to use to introduce your kindergartner to the print painting techniques. Ethan and I have been having a great time learning new methods to create some fun images.

This swarm of bees was made with my sons fingers: the bodies were made from his index finger, the heads are from the tip of his pinkie, and the wings were made from his thumb prints. The bees got their stripes and antenna's from a black felt tip marker which he used after the paint dried.

This adorable caterpillar was made by pressing the paint bottle cap into paint and then pressing the cap onto the paper. After the paint was dry Ethan used a black felt tip marker to draw the happy face, antenna, and all those legs (he made sure that caterpillar had a lot of legs!!). To make the caterpillars feet he used the eraser side of a #2 pencil which he dipped in red paint and then pressed it onto the paper. Cute little caterpillar!

This book is amazing!
We have more lessons to explore this week on symmetry, engraving, and making our own foam stamps.
If you'd like to check out the book, it is called

hugs and reassurance

This has been my day with each of my kids.
I'm thankful that I was the one here to hug and reassure them.
I'm trying to remember that their struggles matter to them and that they look to me to swoop them up and be their comfort and the lifter of their heads.

I pray my kids will always see me as a Mom that cares about what they care about.
For isn't that what the Lord does with me when I am struggling?
I learn so much about God through Mothering my children.
Today, I am reminded of these verses...

Ps 55:22 "Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you;
he will never permit the righteous to be moved."

1 Peter 5:6-7 "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you."

Fun (and Learning) with a Newspaper Ball

I have been using an awesome book for early education activities called "Slow and Steady Get Me Ready". My friend Stacy gave it to me. Thanks Stacy!!

This weeks' activity, for my 3 yr old, was called "Hit or Miss". I made a ball out of wadded up newspaper and masking tape. I taped some twine around the ball and then suspended it from a doorway. The boys practiced hitting & kicking the ball. I then told them to use their right hand, or their left foot, to teach/reinforce their understanding of right & left and to also increase coordination on the side they rarely use (my kids are right handed so we worked on their left hand and foot coordination a lot). Then the boys practiced catching the ball. They got a point for catching the ball and got a point deducted if they touched the twine. We also practiced swinging it to one another. Lastly, the boys played with each other. This was by far the best part! They laughed and laughed! Amazing what fun you can foster with a little newspaper, tape and twine!

Ps...
Our house is under construction, so please forgive the messiness.
Also, my boys wanted to wear their pjs today, so yeah, sorry about that too.
Haha.

Pss...
