I am getting things ready for the new school year here in the Bishop household!
I just finished my son's school desk and I thought I would share it with ya'll. Ta-da!
All I did to make this simple desk was,
cut up a map...
I cleaned the surface of the desk with soapy water and then used rubbing alcohol to remove the grime (the rubbing alcohol was a tip from The Bishop - he loves woodworking and told me that if I used rubbing alcohol the Mod Podge would work even better to adhere the paper to the surface). Once the surface was clean, I arranged the map pieces where I wanted to Mod Podge them...
Once all the countries were in place,
Once the paper was dry and set, I Mod Podged the surface of the desk 2 times (letting each coat of Mod Podge dry between applications). I let it sit over night and then I used 220 grit sandpaper to lightly sand around the edges of the desk...
2 more coats of Mod Podge to seal the paper and
cover the sanded edges and the desk was done!
I think my favorite aspect of this Mod Podged Map is that I was able to fit all the countries that we pray for and have missionary friends living in! We can pray for them daily as we learn about their countries! Our dear friends the Zavala's live in Kenya and I made sure that country was on our desk surface...
As my husband and I use Mod Podge more we are discovering how easy it is to use and how great the results are every time! It is fun to take something scratched and damaged and simply cover it up with pretty paper! And we all know, I LOVE PAPER!
This project cost me nothing - BIG SMILE!! :D
ps...

This is a great idea to remember people in far away places that we care about! LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteHow did you keep the paper from getting wrinkled?
Hi Crystelle :)
DeleteI love the spelling of your name! Thanks for stopping by!
I used an old Michelin Tires map and it was heavy duty paper. I am not sure how other people Mod Podge (I am pretty new to using this medium) but I apply the Mod Podge onto the back of the paper and then lay it down on the surface. I used my library card (oops, sorry library) to smooth out the paper. I have had great luck using heavier weight papers with Mod Podge. Once it is dry I seal the top with Mod Podge a couple times. Hope this helps!! :)
Blessings,
Janiene

Hi Theresa! I used Mod Podge Matte. :)
DeleteVery cool! I actually want to do this exact same thing to an old desk my husband picked up for our daughter at a yard sale, only I wanted to make an ABC/123-type of topper, since she is only 2 1/2. It's nice to see this tutorial that will surely help once I get around to actually doing it! I'm your newest follower :)
