turning favorite t-shirts into pillows!

I thought I would give a quick tutorial on how I turned my son's favorite t-shirts into decorative pillows for their beds. Back in January I posted a couple pictures of this project and I received a bunch of hits on that post (thank you Pinterest!) and a lot of questions on how I did it.
So, I thought to myself, why have I not yet showed you how I did it?
:) So, here I go...

The t-shirts have to be button-up shirts.
I asked the boys to pick their favorite shirt and here is what they gave me...

My cute sewing machine. She's been going strong for 15 years!

Ok, here is where I forgot to take pictures, but these are SUPER easy to make!
All straight lines and you can't mess it up!
If you have ANY questions, just post a comment and I'll try to help!

Step 1:
Turn the shirt inside-out

Step 2:
Sew along the bottom of the shirt, in a straight line

Step 3:
Sew along the top of the shirt, right under the collar, from arm pit to arm pit (watch out for buttons when you get close to the middle of the shirt)

Step 4:
Sew up each side about an inch in from the seam (when you get up to where the sleeves are, they will curve in a bit. You want a straight line for the pillow so I just ran my stitch an inch in from the side and it missed the armpits.)

Step 5:
Cut off all the excess (so, cut off the sleeves, the collar, and anything else that is excess along your seams)

Step 6:
Turn right-side-out

Step 7:
Insert a pillow, or stuffing. I used a small decorative pillow form from Jo-Anns.

Step 8:
Button up the pillow.

  1. So cute!! My boys have been wanting me to do a Star Wars theme in their room and I have had such a hard time finding Star Wars fabric. I am excited to see this tutorial because I can just make fun pillows out of Star Wars shirts. Thanks for the great idea!

    1. Rachel,

I was at Walmart the other night and they had StarWars shirts on sale for like $5-7 - they were so cute. You could totally make a pillow out of those! :)

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you are having a good week!! :)
