mosaic flower pots {part 2}

Hello, hello!
Welcome back :)

~ ~ ~

mosaic flower pots {part 2}

What you will need:
 sand-less grout
large bowl for mixing grout
large bowl for the rinse water
sponge
butter knife
soup cans or other containers that you can use to dry your pots on
brown paper opened up and laid down on your work surface to catch the mess (i use my old grocery bags)
towel to wipe excess grout from your hands

The grout I used (from Lowes).

To make the grout, you'll want to mix 2 parts powdered grout to 1 part water.
So, for the 4 pots that I grouted tonight,
I mixed together 2 cups grout with 1 cup water.

The consistency of grout will look like thick cake batter...

Here we go!
Time to get messy :)
Use the butter knife to spread the grout into every crack
and all over the pot.

Keep spreading...

Fully covered in grout...

Grab the bowl of water and the sponge.
Wring out all the water from the sponge. You want a damp sponge, not wet.
Clean off the excess grout with the damp sponge using soft strokes...

Starting to see the tile...

Once the excess grout has been removed, I rub my finger along the grout seams to smooth it and give it a better finish...

I keep the grout covered with cellophane while I am working.
This keeps the grout moist.

 The grout is drying...

Let them dry for 24hrs!
Once the grout is dry, buff the tiles with a cotton cloth to make it shiny.
For a nice finishing touch, I painted the inside of the pot :)
Ta-da!!

I can't wait to show you what I am filling them with for Mother's Day
(come back Sunday night to see!).
But, at least you have a tutorial on how to make a mosaic flower pot.
Now it's your turn to go break some tile, get creative, get really messy
and then end up with a beautiful flower pot!

I'd love to see your mosaics if you make some!!!!

 Blessings,
Janiene

  2. Ooooh these are fabulous Janiene!! This is the type of project I would take one look at and be scared away from, but your tutorial is fantastic! I love, LOVE how you painted the inside. What a fun touch to add!

    1. Thanks Rachel! I was super intimidated at first but it is super easy, very inexpensive, turns out great, and lasts forever! Starting on a flat surface is easier - so like a stepping stone or the border of a mirror.

I get all my tile for free too! Just go to Home Depot or Lowes and ask for the bucket of broken/cut tiles. Best to go at the end of the day when the bucket is full :)

  3. These pots are adorable! I've never tried my hand at mosaics, but have always wanted to. This is something I think my 9 yr old granddaughter would love to do this summer. Definitely pinning this tutorial!

    1. Thanks Suzy! This is such a fun project to do with kids - there is really no way of making mosaics wrong :)

My only advice is to have your granddaughter wear something old and do this outside :)

I'll be making stepping stone mosaics with my boys next week for Fathers Day.

When you make them, let me know! I'd love to see them.

      Blessings!
