A Backyard Harvest

I wanted to take Ethan to Riley's Farm to pick apples but there was a frost last year which caused only a few apples to grow on their trees...so no apple picking this year unless you go on Saturdays (no thanks!).

So, I was thinking about what I could do with Ethan to teach him about harvesting fruits and vegetables and it came to me!! My Dad & Stepmom have the most amazing selection of fruit trees on their property. Depending on the time of year the family gets to enjoy oranges, meyer lemons, apricots, apples, plums, and various seasonal veggies. We hopped into the van and took a trip to Papa Ken & Grandma Joan's house.

My Dad taught the boys (mainly Ethan - Owen was having a good time exploring the backyard) how to pick tomatoes and meyer lemons.

Papa taught the boys to pick the red tomatoes and to cut the stem right before the fruit.
Tomato harvesting...
Papa taught the boys to find the yellow lemons because yellow means they are ready/ripe.
Lemon harvesting...

Ethan also picked a beautiful yellow rose :)

When we got home we had a taste of the tomato and the lemon. I told them that farmers always taste their crop to ensure it is a good harvest :)  We tasted the acidic tomatoes & then the sour lemons...

Thank you Papa Ken for the lesson on picking fruit! We enjoyed it very much!

Painting Pumpkins

As a Mom of a 4yr old and a 2yr old, the thought of carving a pumpkin without my husband home to help terrified me! The mess, the knife, the chaos, the, the, the what-ifs!

So, I opened my Better Homes & Gardens magazine (thank you Sharon for the subscription!!) and I found an article on painting pumpkins. To check out some of the ideas for painted pumpkins, click here:
http://www.bhg.com/halloween/pumpkin-decorating/painted-pumpkin-ideas/
The boys got free pumpkins at Tarbell Realtors pumpkin patch on Saturday. Owen picked a huge pumpkin (of course) and Ethan picked a small pumpkin that he was able to carry himself. Ethan told us that he will get a big pumpkin next year when he is 5 and he has 5yr old big muscles - he cracks me up!

The pumpkins before...

I love this paint! We use it for everything and it washes out of everything!

The boys wanted to clean their pumpkins before they painted them :)

And they had a fun time painting them!

And, voila! Here are their painted pumpkins...

I expected them to cover every single inch of the pumpkin with paint but they both went for a more minimalist approach :)

Happy Harvest to you all!!

homemade babyfood

My husband and I have made baby food for all of our kids. Along the way I have learned a few things and have some suggestions for anyone looking to make their own babyfood. So, if this subject interests you, keep on reading...

The benefits
*We have saved hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars!
*Our children eat balanced and nutritious foods.
*Healthy foods make for a healthy baby!
*So Easy! It takes one night a month to make all the foods and freeze them. Just pop in a great CD or set up the laptop in the kitchen and watch a movie while you work.

What do you need to start?
Go to this website and look around: http://www.superbabyfood.com/
Ruth Yaron's "Super Baby Food" book is awesome!!! It is a step-by-step guide on how to make baby food, store it, know when to introduce it to baby, and it has hundreds of toddler meal recipes too! I love her book and have given it to countless Mom's as a gift! You can purchase it from Amazon for $13.57 new or $1 used.

Here is what the book looks like...

You will also need the following:
*A blender, food processor, magic bullet, or Vitamix. I was given a Vitamix when I had my first son and it is seriously the BEST gift I have ever received. It is so amazing that I would seriously consider purchasing it again if mine were to get stolen, break or disappear :)
For more information on the Vitamix blender, visit their website at http://www.vitamix.com/index.asp?COUPON=07-0063&002=2180404&004=2079073683&005=101188180&006=7927595763&007=Search&008=&gclid=CPau3OmtgqwCFRJThwodKT6DLQ

*Ice cube trays (BPA free). I like OXO's ice cube trays because they come with a lid to slide over the cubes. I also use Target's Safeway brand ice cube trays.

*Coffee grinder (designate it for baby food only! Coffee beans contain an oil that leaves a residue in the grinder so you will not want to grind coffee in it.)

*Freezer ziplock bags

Last night I made oatmeal cereal, yams, butternut squash, brown rice cereal and acorn squash. Here are some photos of the process...

CEREALS

Here is a picture of the Oatmeal & Brown Rice that I use to make baby cereals. As Ava gets bigger I can combine the grains together to make a super cereal. I can also add other grains such as millet, quinoa, beans, lentils, flax seed, bran, etc, when she is older. But, right now she gets either brown rice or oatmeal...

I measured out 1 cup of oatmeal and ground it to a flour-like consistency...

I put the oatmeal flour into the Vitamix with 2 cups of HOT water.  Let the Vitamix blend for 10 min on medium speed...

I let the oatmeal cereal cool in the refrigerator overnight then I transfer it to ice cube trays to freeze. The process is exactly the same for brown rice cereal.

VEGETABLES
Oh the wonderful world of vegetables! Cook the vegetables till they are soft (either in the oven, microwaved, or steamed). Here are some pictures of the veggies I cooked last night...

Butternut squash cooking in the oven...

Scooping out the flesh of the butternut squash...

Yams need to be pricked and wrapped in foil before baking. If you do not wrap them in foil you will start to smell a very sweet odor that will all of a sudden fill your house with a burnt odor. Yams drip syrupy liquid when cooking and it will burn on the bottom of your oven. This is a lesson I need to remind myself of and learn already! I keep doing it over and over again :/

 Acorn squash cooking...

Acorn squash cooling before I scoop out the flesh...

 The pureed yams. Yum!

STORING THE BABYFOOD

After I puree the food I let it cool in a tupperwear in the refrigerator...

Once the puree has cooled I freeze it in icecube trays...

After the cubes are frozen I put them in freezer ziplock bags and label them...

When I want to feed Ava, I take one or two cubes out of the freezer and microwave it at 40% power for 30-40 seconds. I add some water to the puree to get it to the desired consistency.

There you go! That is the process to make your own babyfood cereals and vegetables. Get the book "Super Baby Food" and start making fresh, healthy, and inexpensive babyfood.

A couple of closing thoughts...
*It's best to use organic produce
*Be sure to freeze the babyfood within 24 hrs
*Pick one day a month to make your babyfood
*Have fun introducing your baby to new foods!

Some of the foods we introduced to our babies that are not normally bottled in babyfood jars...
*Beets
*Parsley
*Broccoli
*Papaya
*Kale
*Quinoa
*Millet & Barley
*And many, many more!

Fun with a 25yr old Easy Bake Oven

Today, my Mom and Grandma came for a visit. My Mom brought a surprise with her...the Easy Bake Oven I played with when I was a kid (still in the original box)! We cleaned it, plugged it in, and squealed with delight when the light turned on and the oven heated up

Grandma bought like 8 varieties of Easy Bake packets (they sell them at the 99cent Store now). Ethan chose brownies first, so Grandma mixed it up...

Owen helped with the mixing...

The brownie in the "cooling station" as my Mom called it...

The finished brownie, and let me say, it was so yummy!!

After the brownies, Grandma and her boys made some heart-shaped cookies.  Owen was so excited to make cookies...

Owen wanted to share one of his cookie creations with Great Grandma. There were so many sprinkles on top, you couldn't even see the cookie! :)

For their last treat, Ethan chose cinnamon sugar pretzels. These were so cute and yummy!

Yum! Cinnamon sugar pretzels!

Thank you Grandma Sandy for baking yummy treats with us today!!!
