I wanted to take Ethan to Riley's Farm to pick apples but there was a frost last year which caused only a few apples to grow on their trees...so no apple picking this year unless you go on Saturdays (no thanks!).
So, I was thinking about what I could do with Ethan to teach him about harvesting fruits and vegetables and it came to me!! My Dad & Stepmom have the most amazing selection of fruit trees on their property. Depending on the time of year the family gets to enjoy oranges, meyer lemons, apricots, apples, plums, and various seasonal veggies. We hopped into the van and took a trip to Papa Ken & Grandma Joan's house.
My Dad taught the boys (mainly Ethan - Owen was having a good time exploring the backyard) how to pick tomatoes and meyer lemons.
Papa taught the boys to pick the red tomatoes and to cut the stem right before the fruit.

Papa taught the boys to find the yellow lemons because yellow means they are ready/ripe.

Ethan also picked a beautiful yellow rose :)
When we got home we had a taste of the tomato and the lemon. I told them that farmers always taste their crop to ensure it is a good harvest :) We tasted the acidic tomatoes & then the sour lemons...
Thank you Papa Ken for the lesson on picking fruit! We enjoyed it very much!
Love, Ethan and Owen

I love how Grandpa let him actually cut the tomato off the vine so he could really experience harvesting for himself. What a fun, educational afternoon! Your Dad's yard with all the fruit trees sounds heavenly! Definitely something I hope to have one day.
